Dry Socket Symptoms
The most common and unavoidable symptoms of dry socket include persistent pain that lasts for several days after the tooth extraction, visible bone in the empty socket, loss of blood clot, pain that radiates from the jaw to the ear, eye or neck, and/or an unpleasant taste.
Relieving the Signs and Symptoms of Dry Socket
Clove Oil – One of the most well-known home remedies for dry socket, clove oil can significantly relieve pain and swelling in the gums. It is crucial to dilute the oil to prevent stinging and apply it with a water-soaked cotton bud at least two times a day.
Yogurt – In addition to providing some cool relief from painful, swollen gums, yogurt is full of bacteria that helps support the body’s immune system to help prevent infection and aid in healing.
Cold Tea Bags – Place a cold, wet tea bag directly on the exposed socket and hold it in place with your teeth. The tannic acid in the tea will promote healing by causing the blood vessels to tighten. Hold the tea bag in place for no more than 30 minutes a day.
Advanced-Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) – One of the most cutting-edge remedies available for dry sockets and other injuries, Platelet Rich Fibrin is offered by the CENTER for Advanced Periodontal and Implant Therapy. Using a small amount of the patient’s blood, Dr. Aalam or Dr. Krivitsky will create protective membranes comprised of a concentration of white blood cells and platelets, accelerating the body’s ability to heal. Placing the PRF in a dry socket not only acts as an alternative blood clot, but it also speeds up tissue growth and reduces, if not eliminates, the symptoms of dry socket.
