The CENTER for Advanced Periodontal & Implant Therapy now offers advanced platelet-rich fibrin for many periodontal procedures and complications, including gum recession and dry socket. This state-of-the-art stem cell treatment is changing the face of periodontistry with its many health benefits, and our Los Angeles periodontists are excited to provide this treatment to our patients!
What is Advanced Platelet-Rich Fibrin?
The ground-breaking technology behind advanced platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been used successfully in dentistry for over ten years. Advanced PRF is a stem cell treatment that involves the creation of a thin, durable layer of platelet-rich fibrin. Fibrin contains powerful proteins that facilitate swifter healing and wound repair, while at the same time reducing the risk of infection. These healing properties make PRF a great treatment for certain periodontal issues, such as receding gums and dry socket.
Dr. Aalam and Dr. Krivitsky are two of the very first periodontists in the United States to be trained and offer advanced PRF treatments for their patients.
Advanced PRF for Receding Gums
At our Brentwood periodontist office, PRF is used for oral surgery procedures like gum grafts or receding gums. PRF utilizes a patient’s own blood, which is placed in a centrifuge that separates the blood into three distinct parts: plasma, red blood cells, and white blood cells and platelets. It is the white blood cells and platelets which are further utilized for gum recession treatment.
During PRF gum recession treatment, the blood is processed and immediately placed onto the surgical site. This allows the patient to jump-start their body’s own healing process.
Treating Dry Socket with Stem Cells
After a tooth has been removed, a blood clot forms in the socket (the hole where the tooth has been removed). If this blood clot dissolves, the socket can be exposed to a number of foreign objects, leading to discomfort and pain. This condition is called alveolar osteitis or “dry socket,” and advanced PRF can be used as a preventative measure to help tooth extraction patients recover faster and significantly reduce the risk of developing this condition. In the event that a patient develops alveolar osteitis, PRF is an effective dry socket prevention.
The Benefits of Advanced Platelet-Rich Fibrin Stem Cell Treatment
Non-invasive procedure – PRF is a non-invasive procedure. There’s only a small amount of blood that’s needed to create the PRF material, which is then applied to the treatment area. The minimally-invasive nature of this stem cell treatment makes it a great option to help enhance treatment outcomes.
Faster healing – Advanced PRF stimulates the body’s own self-healing capabilities, which reduces the risks of complications. And since PRF uses your own blood, the body is more likely to respond positively to treatment.
Faster recovery – PRF boosts the body’s own healing ability, decreasing recovery time and reducing the risk of complications.
Reduced side effects – Not only does PRF help tissue repair, it can reduce the pain and swelling associated with gum grafting and extraction procedures. This increases a patient’s comfort level and also reduces the risk of infection or other side effects.
