Flossing & You: How Proper Periodontal Care Protects Your Teeth and Gums
Most people would answer this question with a resounding yes. And while it may seem like an overstatement, there actually is something you can do to protect your teeth and gums long term. Flossing is one the most significant ways that people can make an incredible difference in their gums, teeth, and mouths.
Magazines, commercials, and ads sell various ways to keep your teeth bright and healthy, however the reality is that a lot of the work can be accomplished with a simple string of floss. Alexandre Amir Aalam, DDS, and Alina Krivitsky, DDS, are a husband-and-wife periodontal team who can help get your teeth, gums, and mouth back on the healthy track. There’s no time like the present to get your smile shining brightly and your mouth feeling clean. Contact our office at 310-826-8242 today to book your appointment.
Why Floss Daily?
Flossing on a regular, daily basis is one of the best, easiest, and cheapest ways patients can improve both their oral and their overall health. Many people don’t know this, but flossing can actually help you live longer. On average, patients that floss live 6.4 years longer than those that don’t. Spending a few minutes flossing every night before bed can give you extra years of life!
Flossing helps remove plaque that’s particularly difficult to reach with a toothbrush. The most important, and most difficult, places in the mouth are directly under the gum line and in the tight spaces in between the teeth. These are the places where cavities and gum disease most often form because, understandably, they are the hardest to clean. The only way to reach these difficult places is by flossing.
Flossing not only gets unwanted, residual food out from between your teeth, but it saves your smile and your breath too. No one wants an unsightly smile or, worse yet, unpleasant breath. Gum disease is a huge cause of both and is easily avoided by regularly maintaining your teeth, including flossing and brushing every night, and seeing a periodontist like Dr. Aalam or Dr. Krivitsky for regular checkups.
Flossing Teeth Correctly
When done correctly, flossing is quite easy. Wrap the floss around both the left and right middle fingers. Use your index finger and thumb to gently and repeatedly move the floss up and down between the gum and tooth, making a C like shape with the floss. This is the best way to remove plaque and any unwanted food particles. Repeat this process for all your teeth and then brush your teeth afterwards. Flossing removes the gunk from between your teeth, and brushing takes it away.
